The gift you give for a wedding will differ on the type of wedding or the culture of the persons giving the wedding.  Some of the weddings include:

• Many modern weddings these days are in a reception hall with a band and all the trimmings.  For a wedding like this, the customary gift is to give cash (check) for the amount of each "plate" (e.g., the amount it costs for each guest).  This may not be cheap, some dinners cost $100 - $150 per person in large cities. A treasury bill would also be appropriate.

• If the couple did not have have a Bridal Shower or an Engagement Party, you could give them a nice gift (which they might be registered for)

• Some couples throw "pot-luck" receptions.  This is where the guests bring the food and refreshment to the party.  The gift is the food, and sometimes, the bride will walk around the room with a money belt (or money bag) and the guests will throw a few bucks into it.

• The couple might have a small intimate wedding or elope.  They probably have little fan-fare about the wedding, and a small gift to wish them happiness would be appropriate.

A few notes:

• If you do not have much money, or cannot afford a gift.  A nice greeting card is all that is needed.  The reason you have been invited is because they want you to join in their happiness.

• If you have to travel great distances, or spend a large amount of money to get there, that is your gift to them - being there.  Once again, only a nice greeting card is all that is needed.
