Commemorates the ending and the beginning of the reading of the Torah (Jewish holy book).  The holiday is religious in nature with special ceremonies for its commemoration.  In the evening there are large celebrations with people carrying the Torahs around the synagouge followed by singing and dancing. In a modern sense, this is the Jewish New Year.  However this means much more to a Jew in a religious sense.  These are two days when an person observing the holiday begins to seriously contemplate what their relationship with G-d and everyone around them.  This holiday comes one week before Yom Kippur, the day of atonement for the Jewish people.  This is a holy holiday full of reflection,  but is is also marked with festive meals each night.

Shabbot (Sabbath) is the day of rest in the Jewish religion. It is observed beginning at sunset on Friday evening, and ending at sunset on Saturday evening.  This is one of the holiest days of the year.  Observers refrain from work during this time period, and spend time with family or spend the time studying or in prayer.

This is the "Day of Atonement" in the Jewish religion.  This is the day that g-d opens up the book of life and decides upon your fate for the coming year.  It is the holiest day of the year. Yom Kippur (Judaism 101)
